The Belfry of Dendermonde is part of the historic city hall complex on the Grote Markt. The oldest parts date from the fourteenth century, though the tower was carefully rebuilt after the destruction of the First World War. Since 1999 the belfry has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the belfries of Belgium and France.

Accessibility around the ground floor and the Grote Markt is good: the square has been recently repaved with smooth surfaces and clear walking zones, and the adjoining city hall wing has a ramp at one of the entrances. The interior climb up the tower is not feasible for wheelchair users due to the narrow spiral staircase. The canopies of the city hall and the terraces on the Markt are, however, easily accessible.

An adapted toilet is available in the city hall and in the nearby Vleeshuis, which is also wheelchair accessible. Disabled parking spaces are located at the Heldenplaats and at the Sint-Gillislaan. The Grote Markt is an ideal base for an accessible wheelchair walk to the Vleeshuis, the Beguinage, and the city park, all within a few hundred metres.
