Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen is a remarkable 230-hectare urban nature reserve nestled on the western edge of Ghent in East Flanders. This low-lying marshland area, situated along the river Leie, is one of the most important wetland habitats in the region. It is a true bird paradise -- over 200 species have been recorded here, including kingfishers, herons, and various wintering waterfowl that gather in the flooded meadows during autumn and winter.

The Meerskantpad is the reserve's flagship accessible trail, stretching 4.4 km along the raised embankment that encircles the wetland. This semi-paved path offers a mostly flat route with firm surfaces suitable for wheelchair users and visitors with mobility aids. Along the way, multiple bird observation points and information panels provide opportunities to pause and take in the wildlife. The trail offers lovely views over the open water and reed beds, especially atmospheric during the misty mornings of the cooler months.

The nature centre De Bourgoyen, located at the main entrance on Driepikkelstraat, serves as the starting point for walks and provides adapted toilet facilities. Accessible parking is available at the entrance. The centre also organises guided walks and educational activities, some of which are specifically designed to be inclusive. Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen proves that you do not need to leave the city to find a genuine, accessible nature experience -- it is a green oasis right on Ghent's doorstep.
