About this location

Mechels Broek is a protected nature reserve south of Mechelen, managed by Natuurpunt. The area encompasses wet grasslands, reed marshes and carr woodland along the river Dijle.

Boardwalk

The boardwalk is the absolute highlight for wheelchair users: a raised wooden path of 1.5 km running straight through the marshland. The path is wide enough for a wheelchair and has handrails on both sides.

  • Surface: Flat wooden boardwalk, no thresholds
  • Width: Minimum 1.5 metres
  • Rest areas: Several viewing platforms with benches

What to see

  • Waterbirds (herons, grebes, ducks)
  • Seasonal flora (bulrush, water lily)
  • Viewpoint over the Dijle valley

Getting there

  • Parking: Car park on Stuivenbergbaan, with accessible spaces.
  • Public transport: Mechelen station is 3 km away; bus 285 stops 500 metres from the entrance.

Please note

  • No toilet facilities on site.
  • The boardwalk can be slippery in winter conditions.
  • Dogs are not allowed (nature reserve).
