Molsbroek
♿ Wheelchair accessibleMolsbroek is a beautiful nature reserve of approximately 80 hectares located just outside the centre of Lokeren in East Flanders. This wetland area is characterised by its extensive marshes, reed beds, open water, and wet meadows, creating a rich habitat for a wide variety of birds, amphibians, and aquatic plants. It is a popular spot for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, particularly during migration seasons when the reserve comes alive with visiting species.
The highlight for visitors with reduced mobility is the paved ring dike trail that encircles the reserve. This 4.5 km route follows the raised embankment surrounding the marshland, offering a flat, smooth surface that is fully accessible for wheelchair users. The trail provides excellent vantage points over the water and reed beds, and several bird hides along the route allow visitors to observe wildlife at close range. The circular nature of the trail means you return to your starting point without needing to retrace your steps.
The visitor centre at the main entrance serves as the starting point for walks and provides information about the reserve's flora and fauna. Adapted toilet facilities are available at the centre, and accessible parking spaces are located nearby. Molsbroek is a wonderful example of a local nature reserve that has prioritised inclusive access, proving that a rewarding wetland walk does not need to be an obstacle course. It is an ideal destination for a peaceful, accessible half-day outing in the Waasland region.
