Zwin Nature Park
♿ Wheelchair accessibleZwin Nature Park is a renowned coastal nature reserve located on the border of Belgium and the Netherlands near Knokke-Heist in West Flanders. It is one of the most important bird habitats in Europe, where tidal salt marshes, mudflats, and dunes create a rich ecosystem that attracts hundreds of migratory and breeding bird species. The park combines an enclosed bird sanctuary area with a vast open plain that floods with seawater at high tide.
The park has made outstanding efforts to be accessible to all visitors. Four free all-terrain wheelchairs (Hippocampe models) are available for loan, allowing visitors to explore even the sandy and uneven sections of the reserve. The main visitor trail of approximately 2 km features a combination of semi-paved paths and sturdy boardwalks, providing a comfortable route for wheelchair users. Several bird hides along the trail are designed to be wheelchair accessible, with lowered viewing windows.
The modern visitor centre, opened in 2016, is fully accessible with an elevator providing access to all floors, including the panoramic rooftop terrace that offers sweeping views over the Zwin plain. Adapted toilets are available in the centre, and the parking area includes designated accessible spaces close to the entrance. The on-site cafe and gift shop are also accessible, making Zwin Nature Park a model for inclusive nature tourism.
