Roosenberg Abbey Waasmunster
Our Lady of Roosenberg Abbey in Waasmunster is an active Cistercian convent at the heart of the Waasland, close to Lokeren. This small community of sisters lives in a beautiful 19th-century monastic complex surrounded by large cloister gardens, fruit orchards and a herb garden that plays an important role in the centuries-old monastic tradition. The abbey is open to visitors seeking peace, reflection and simplicity.
For wheelchair users the visitor route via the main entrance has been made fully accessible. The main entrance on the south side has a level approach without thresholds. The chapel, the visitor section of the cloisters and the herb garden are reachable without steps. The herb garden is particularly beautiful and is still maintained according to monastic principles, with more than a hundred medicinal plants. The paths in the garden are a mixture of paved path and gravel, but largely navigable.
An accessible toilet is available in the visitor reception area. The small shop sells the sisters' own products: herbal teas, jam, honey and handmade goods. Visiting hours are limited and the sisters ask that visits be announced in advance. The car park beside the abbey has two disabled spaces on a paved surface, a few metres from the main entrance.
The abbey is a unique experience for anyone wanting to feel the silence and the spiritual dimension of a monastic community. The surrounding fields of the Waasland invite a peaceful walk, and the centres of Waasmunster and Lokeren are just a few minutes' drive away. Combine a visit with a terrace stop on the Markt of Lokeren or a walk in the Molsbroek for a full nature-and-culture day.
