♿ Wheelchair accessible

Postel Abbey lies in the far north of Mol and was founded in 1140 as a branch of Floreffe Abbey. The Premonstratensian community is still active today and manages not only the historic abbey church but also a herb garden, a cheese dairy, and a brewery. The surrounding estate consists largely of woods and heathland, a beautiful green setting on the Dutch border.

Accessibility is partial. The abbey church has several steps at the front facade, but there is a side entrance with a low threshold through which wheelchair users can reach the nave. The interior is level on the ground floor. The visitor reception and the shop selling abbey products are modern with a step-free entrance and an adapted toilet. The historic herb garden has semi-paved paths that are easily navigable in dry weather; they can become muddy after rain.

There is a large car park with disabled parking spaces near the abbey. The Postel Heath woodlands extend around the grounds, with several paved main avenues suitable for wheelchair walks. Postel is an oasis of calm, ideal to combine with a visit to the nearby De Maat nature reserve and the Zilvermeer.

Good to know

Reservation
No booking is needed for the abbey church, herb garden and shop. Guided tours by the community or of the brewery do require an appointment in advance.
Busy and quiet times
Busiest on summer Sundays and during the herb harvest in July-August. Quieter on weekdays, early mornings and in winter outside public holidays.
Things to note
The abbey tower is not accessible to wheelchair users. The semi-paved paths in the herb garden become muddy after rain, and some woodland paths in the Postel Heath are unsuitable for wheelchairs.
Visit tip
Combine with a drink and a piece of Postel cheese at the abbey shop and a wheelchair walk along the paved main avenues of the Postel Heath; visit on a dry day in May-June, ideally, when the herb garden is in full bloom.
