The Groot Begijnhof of Lier is one of the thirteen Flemish beguinages recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This beautiful, enclosed city quarter dates from the thirteenth century and comprises dozens of historic houses, lanes, a church, and green inner gardens. The beguinage has a unique, serene atmosphere that lets you forget you are in the middle of the city. It is a living neighbourhood where people still reside.

Accessibility of the Groot Begijnhof is partial. The main entrance is wide enough for a wheelchair and the central lanes are passable, although the surface consists of cobblestones, which makes riding less comfortable. Some side streets are narrow and have irregular paving. There is no public toilet within the beguinage itself. The beguinage church has a threshold at the entrance.

The Groot Begijnhof is located on the edge of the centre of Lier. Accessible parking spaces are available in the surrounding streets. Lier station is within walking distance. Despite the limitations posed by the historic paving, a visit to the beguinage is well worth it for its unique atmosphere and architecture. The cobblestones are most passable in dry weather.
