Grand-Hornu
Grand-Hornu is a former coal mining complex in Hornu, near Mons, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012. This imposing neoclassical complex, built in the first half of the 19th century by industrialist Henri De Gorge, is a unique example of industrial architecture and social urban planning. Today it houses two prestigious museums: the MACS (Museum of Contemporary Arts) for contemporary art and the CID (Centre for Innovation and Design) for innovative design.
Accessibility at Grand-Hornu is partial. The exhibition halls in the Magasin au Foin, the Écuries and the North Wing are accessible to wheelchair users. The Atrium is unfortunately not accessible. The courtyard and main corridors provide sufficient space for wheelchairs. PMR parking spaces are available and adapted toilets are present. The entrance ticket provides access to both the MACS and CID exhibitions as well as the entire Grand-Hornu site.
Grand-Hornu is located in the Borinage region, west of Mons, accessible via the E19 and E42. The complex offers changing exhibitions of international calibre throughout the year. The site is a fascinating intersection of industrial heritage and contemporary creativity, providing a remarkable setting for a cultural day out in Hainaut.
