Lake Virelles - Aquascope
Lake Virelles is one of the most important natural sites in Wallonia, located near Chimay in the province of Hainaut. This 80-hectare lake and its surroundings form a recognised Natura 2000 area harbouring exceptional biodiversity. The Aquascope, the visitor centre on the shore of the lake, offers interactive exhibitions on the nature and ecology of the wetland, as well as birdwatching hides and nature walks.
Accessibility at the Aquascope and Lake Virelles is good. The visitor centre is fully wheelchair accessible with a lift, wide passages and adapted toilet facilities. Designated accessible parking spaces are available near the entrance. The main walking path around the lake is paved and suitable for wheelchair users. Several observation hides are step-free, allowing wheelchair users to enjoy the rich birdlife of the site.
Lake Virelles is located 3 kilometres from Chimay and is accessible via the N99. The Aquascope offers activities throughout the year, including guided nature walks, workshops and seasonal events. A visit can be combined with a trip to nearby Chimay, famous for its Trappist abbey and cheese dairy, or a walk through the surrounding bocage landscape. The Aquascope terrace offers a beautiful view over the lake.
