Saint Peter's Church Anderlecht
The Saint Peter's Church in Anderlecht is a late Gothic collegiate church at the heart of the old village centre of Anderlecht, today a Brussels municipality. This 14th-century church stands beside the famous Erasmus House and, together with the beguinage and the old presbytery, forms one of the most beautiful historic ensembles in Brussels. The richly decorated funeral chapel of Erasmus and the splendid late Gothic wall paintings make a visit well worth your time.
For wheelchair users there is an adapted side entrance on the east side of the church, with a gentle ramp of a few metres. Once inside you are in a level nave with generous aisles between the pews. The Erasmus funeral chapel and the late Gothic side aisles are reachable without thresholds. The high choir is reached over a step of fifteen centimetres; for those who need help, a volunteer is usually present who can put down a portable ramp.
There is no accessible toilet inside the church, but the Erasmus House a few metres away does have facilities. Parking is possible on the Erasmusplein; two disabled spaces are reserved on the north side of the square. The square itself has recently been redesigned with level cobbled surfaces and gentle transitions.
The Saint Peter's Church and its surroundings can also be reached by metro via the Sint-Guido stop, five minutes away by wheelchair via a level route. Combine a visit to the church with the Erasmus House and a stroll through the small but charming beguinage. Anderlecht has put work into accessibility in recent years, and its old historic centre is today an underrated stop for anyone wanting to discover Brussels off the tourist beaten track.
