Utopia Library Aalst
Utopia in Aalst is a striking cultural meeting place that combines a city library and a performing arts academy in one building, designed by the renowned architectural practice KAAN. The building integrates a historic Jesuit college with contemporary extensions and offers an extensive collection of books, magazines, digital media and study spaces. The interior feels welcoming, bright and modern, with plenty of natural light through large windows.
The building is fully accessible to wheelchair users. The main entrance is barrier-free via an automatic sliding door, and every floor can be reached by generous lifts. The wide, open rooms with paved floors make manoeuvring easy. Accessible toilets are available on several floors, and adapted study spots with sit/stand tables are provided. Staff are happy to help with finding books or using the catalogue.
The dedicated underground car park has accessible parking spaces connected directly to the library floors via the lift. The area around Utopia is paved and barrier-free, with adapted crossings. Admission to the library is free for everyone, and activities such as lectures and workshops are made inclusive wherever possible, with interpreters or hearing loops on request.
