Domein Hoge Rielen Kasterlee
Domein Hoge Rielen is an extensive youth and training centre in Kasterlee, laid out on more than 100 hectares of natural land between heathland, woods and fens. The estate is primarily a residential site for schools, youth movements and sports groups, but day visitors are welcome to explore the paved walking loops through the Kempen countryside. The combination of play forest, sports pitches and educational fens makes for a family-friendly outing.
The main buildings and reception are barrier-free by design and equipped with accessible toilets. The central walking paths are paved with concrete or asphalt, flat and wide, and suitable for wheelchairs, rollators and handbikes. Side trails in the woods and heath are sometimes semi-paved or sandy, on which a wheelchair rolls less easily. The main loops around the fens and sports pitches, however, can be fully traversed barrier-free.
The large visitor car park has reserved spaces at the main entrance. Alongside the reception is an accessible public toilet. The site also has a few benches and a viewing point over the fen. Combine your outing with a visit to the accessible Kabouterbos of Lichtaart just a few kilometres away.

- For day visits without an overnight stay, no reservation is needed — the paved main loops are freely accessible. Group stays are booked via the site. On big school-event days the car park can fill up — call ahead for an alternative on those days.
- Busy and quiet times
- Summer holiday weekends (July-August), the school-trip peak in May-June and scout-camp seasons bring intense group crowds. Weekdays outside school holidays the estate is notably quiet — a surprisingly still Kempen nature experience.
- Things to note
- The main loops around the fens and sports pitches are step-free, but side trails through woods/heath are often semi-paved or sandy — not recommended without a handbike. The play-forest zone with natural ground is only limitedly usable for wheelchairs.
- Visit tip
- Combine your visit with the accessible Kabouterbos of Lichtaart (5 min drive) for a family-friendly Kempen day. Early morning offers the most peaceful nature along the fens — ideal for photos and calm before any group crowds arrive.
