Gravensteen Castle Ghent: Wheelchair Access?
The Gravensteen is an imposing medieval castle in the heart of Ghent, built around 1180 by Philip of Alsace. It is the only remaining medieval castle in Flanders with an almost intact defence system. The castle houses a museum about the history of the building and the city, including a collection of weapons and instruments of torture. From the battlements, you have a magnificent view over the city centre of Ghent.
Wheelchair accessibility is partial. The ground floor of the castle is accessible, but the upper floors and the wall walk are only reachable via stairs. Due to the historic character of the building, adaptations are limited. Adapted toilets are available on the ground floor. The inner courtyard is paved and flat, allowing comfortable movement. Check the website for the most up-to-date accessibility information.
The Gravensteen is centrally located in Ghent and is easily accessible by public transport (tram and bus). Parking garages with disabled parking spaces are available nearby. A visit to the Gravensteen combines perfectly with exploring the Ghent city centre, the Graslei and Sint-Baafsplein. Around the castle, numerous restaurants and cafes allow you to enjoy the atmosphere of Ghent.
Good to know
- Reservation
- Online tickets help avoid queues, especially during holidays. Guided tours on request (not all are wheelchair-friendly - ask for the adapted tour).
- Busy and quiet times
- Busiest on sunny Saturdays and in July and August. Quietest on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
- Things to note
- The Gravensteen is a medieval castle - spiral staircases, cobblestones, and narrow passages mean only part is wheelchair accessible. The inner courtyard, the ground-floor rooms, and the exhibition space on level 0 are reachable. The upper floors and ramparts are not.
- Visit tip
- Ask at the ticket desk about the adapted route - a reduced ticket is possible because only part of the castle is accessible. Combine with the Graslei and the Belfry, both largely accessible.
