Sentier de la Trientale - Hautes Fagnes
The Sentier de la Trientale is a remarkable accessible trail located in the Hautes Fagnes (High Fens), Belgium's highest peatland plateau at approximately 600 metres above sea level. Situated in the province of Liege near the German border, this 1.5-kilometre path offers wheelchair users a rare opportunity to experience one of Europe's most important and atmospheric moorland landscapes. The trail takes its name from the trientalis europaea, a delicate wildflower found in this unique habitat.
The route features well-maintained boardwalk sections that cross the wet peatland, providing a stable and accessible surface above the fragile bog terrain. The trail is Access-i certified, and didactic modules along the way are available in French, German, and Dutch, explaining the exceptional ecology of the High Fens -- from sphagnum mosses and carnivorous sundews to the distinctive cotton grass that sways in the wind. The landscape feels truly wild and untouched, offering a sense of remoteness that is rare in densely populated Belgium.
Please note that there are no adapted toilet facilities along the trail, so it is advisable to plan accordingly. PMR parking is available at the trailhead. The Hautes Fagnes are at their most dramatic in late summer, when the heather blooms purple across the moors, and in winter, when frost and mist lend the plateau an almost otherworldly atmosphere. Warm clothing is recommended at any time of year, as the exposed altitude brings cooler temperatures and frequent wind. This is one of Belgium's most extraordinary natural experiences, and the accessible trail ensures it is open to everyone.
