Mons in Motion (Doudou)
Mons in Motion, also known as the Maison du Doudou, is an interactive experience centre in the heart of Mons that tells the story of the Ducasse tradition, the annual folk festivities around Trinity Sunday. The centre explains why Mons' Ducasse is on the UNESCO list of intangible heritage and how the Saint George procession, the 'Lumeçon' combat with the dragon and the thousands of participants have been part of the city's identity for more than seven centuries. The tour combines films, animations, audio fragments and authentic costumes and props.
The museum was designed with accessibility as a starting point. The main entrance is step-free, and all floors are reachable by a spacious lift. The visitor route is fully wheelchair-friendly, with information panels placed at heights easy for wheelchair users to read. Audio guides with subtitles and French sign language are available. An adapted toilet is provided on every floor. The small café-restaurant on the ground floor is also fully accessible.
The museum lies on Mons' Grote Markt, a cobblestone square. The underground car park beneath the Grote Markt has a lift and several adapted spaces. A visit to Mons in Motion combines excellently with a trip to Mons' belfry and the Mundaneum, both close by and also accessible. For those who want to experience the Doudou festival live: at the beginning of June, the city turns upside down.
