Church of Our Lady Bruges
The Church of Our Lady in Bruges is one of the most-visited religious monuments in Flanders. Its brick tower of 115.5 metres is among the tallest in the world. The church houses one of the very few sculptures by Michelangelo that has ever been displayed outside Italy: the Madonna of Bruges from 1504. The ceremonial tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold also make the church an absolute highlight.
The church is partly wheelchair-accessible. The main entrance on Mariastraat is step-free, but the passage to the museum section containing the ceremonial tombs runs via an adapted side entrance with a ramp. The nave is largely level, but the choir sits a few steps higher. For wheelchair users, Michelangelo's Madonna can be admired nicely from the adapted visitor route. Adapted toilets are located in the visitor centre.
The area around the church is largely low-traffic and consists of level paving stones. For Bruges as a whole, however, it should be noted that many narrow streets are covered with old cobblestones; it is wise to follow the signposted accessible walking routes. Reduced-mobility parking spaces are available at the Zand car park and in the underground 't Zand car park. Wheelchair users and their companion receive free admission to the church.
