Saint Walburga's Church Veurne
Saint Walburga's Church in Veurne is one of the most impressive Gothic churches in the Westhoek. Located on the Grote Markt, near the town hall and the Landvoogdijhof, the church was originally intended to be a much larger cathedral, but was never completed due to financial setbacks. The high choir and the slender pillars nonetheless make it a masterpiece of Brabant Gothic. The church plays a central role in the annual Penitents' Procession of Veurne, an age-old tradition that still draws thousands of visitors.
Accessibility is partial because of the historic character. The main entrance on Sint-Walburgapark has a threshold; the church is easily accessible via a side entrance. The interior is mostly on a single level, with sufficient space for wheelchair users in the central nave. The high choir and some side chapels are slightly raised and require extra help. An adapted toilet is available to a limited extent in the church itself, but is provided in the nearby tourist information office.
Disabled parking spaces are available around the Grote Markt and at the station car park. Be aware of the cobblestones on the Grote Markt itself, which can make wheelchair travel difficult. The church combines well with a visit to the town hall, the Landvoogdijhof and other historic buildings around the market square. Avoid busy market days for a quieter visit.
