♿ Wheelchair accessible

Cafe De Vrede on the Grote Markt of Veurne is one of the oldest and most atmospheric cafes in the Westhoek. The name refers to a long past full of war memories, and the cafe has been a meeting place for over a century, both for the people of Veurne and for visitors exploring the historic town centre. The interior is authentically preserved with dark wood panelling, old tiles and a central round bar.

Access to the cafe was made step-free during a renovation in 2020. The entrance on the Grote Markt has a level approach and a wide door. Once inside you find plenty of space between the tables and at the bar for wheelchair users. The cafe area is entirely on the ground floor, and the bar has a lowered section for those who prefer to sit there. The terrace on the Grote Markt can be reached via a level transition and also has level cobbled paving.

The toilet in the cafe is partially adapted: access is step-free and there are grab rails, but the space is a little tight for larger power wheelchairs. For those who need more room, the accessible facilities at the tourist information office are a hundred metres away on foot on the Grote Markt. Parking is possible on the market square itself with disabled spaces.

Cafe De Vrede is an ideal stop for a regional beer or a simple snack while exploring Veurne. Combine a drink with a visit to the Saint Nicholas Church Veurne, the Saint Walburga Church Veurne or the town hall. Veurne is one of the most beautiful small towns in Belgium, and its Grote Markt is fully wheelchair-friendly.

Good to know

Reservation
Booking is not needed for a drink or snack; for groups or during city events (Penitents' Procession at the end of July) it can be handy.
Busy and quiet times
On market days (Wednesday) and summer weekends the cafe is busy with tourists; weekday afternoons keep their authentic local atmosphere.
Things to note
Step-free entrance since the 2020 renovation, level interior and a lowered bar section. **Toilet is partially adapted** — for larger power wheelchairs the accessible facilities at the tourist information office 100m away are more comfortable.
Visit tip
Try a regional beer (Sint-Bernardus of Watou is nearby). Combine with a visit to the [Saint Nicholas Church Veurne](/en/locaties/sint-niklaaskerk-veurne/) and the fully wheelchair-friendly Grote Markt.
