Sphinx Cinema Ghent
Sphinx Cinema is an iconic art-house cinema in the heart of Ghent, on Sint-Michielshelling right next to the Graslei. It is one of the oldest cinemas still in operation in Flanders and has been active since 1912. Sphinx mainly programmes European films, documentaries and world cinema, and organises film festivals in collaboration with Film Fest Gent.
The cinema is partly wheelchair-accessible. The largest screens on the ground floor are reachable via the step-free main entrance and have reserved wheelchair spaces. The smaller screens on the first floor are reachable via a lift installed in 2019. A few screens remain harder to reach, however, because of the historic nature of the building; it is recommended to contact the cinema in advance to find out which films are being shown in the accessible rooms. Adapted toilets are present on the ground floor.
The cinema sits in the low-traffic city centre of Ghent. Reduced-mobility parking spaces are available in the Sint-Michiels and Kouter car parks a few minutes' walk away. The Korenmarkt tram stop (line 1) and Gravensteen stop are nearby with low-floor boarding. Wheelchair users and their companion enjoy a reduced rate on presentation of a disability card.
