Bourla Antwerp (Toneelhuis)
The Bourlaschouwburg (or "the Bourla" for short) is a neoclassical theatre building from 1834 in the centre of Antwerp (Komedieplaats/Graanmarkt) and one of the few 19th-century theatres of this type still in operation in Europe. It is the home of Toneelhuis. Opera Ballet Vlaanderen performs in a different building — the Vlaamse Opera on Frankrijklei 3 (separate listing). The interior of the Bourla is a gem of 19th-century architecture with an imposing domed auditorium.
Accessibility — honest state of affairs. The official Toneelhuis website does not publish concrete details about lifts, wheelchair spaces, hearing loops or adapted toilets. Wheelchair users are advised to contact the box office in advance to discuss both seating and the practical route for the visit. Historically, the Bourla is a 19th-century building with architectural constraints; some claims about it being "fully adapted after renovation" that previously appeared on this page cannot be confirmed based on publicly available sources.
Accessible parking spaces are available in the surrounding streets and in underground car parks (Groenplaats). The building is within walking distance of tram stops on the Meir. For a concrete assessment: contact Toneelhuis via their website.
