Kortrijk in one day

Kortrijk is a surprisingly compact city where culture, greenery and sport are all within walking distance of each other. This day trip combines five locations that are all accessible to wheelchair users, arranged in a logical sequence through town. The Leie banks and the redesigned old town make rolling pleasant, though a few cobbled stretches still need to be factored in.

Start your morning at the Kortrijk city library, a contemporary building with a lift, spacious reading rooms and adapted toilets. Walk or roll on to the Broelmuseum on the Leie — known for its art collection including works by Roelandt Savery. The former hotel-museum complex is largely accessible via an adapted entrance; on arrival, ask at the desk about the lift. Right next to the museum you have a beautiful view of the Broel Towers.

At lunchtime, cross to Groeningepark, a quiet city park with paved paths, benches and plenty of shade. Combine this with a visit to the Schouwburg Kortrijk, which has an accessible entrance hall and reserved wheelchair spaces in the auditorium — check the programme in advance for an evening performance. Close the day on a sporting note at the AZ Groeninge Sportcentrum, where adapted sports infrastructure such as an accessible pool and fitness rooms are available to visitors.

Practical tips: park at Parking Schouwburg or Parking Broeltorens for disabled spaces close to the centre. Distances between stops are limited (200-800 metres), but watch for some slightly sloping streets towards the Leie. Adapted toilets can be found in the library, the sports centre and the theatre. For a snack in between, the terraces on the Grote Markt are almost all wheelchair-friendly.
