Accessible swimming pools in Wallonia

Swimming is one of the most liberating sports for people with reduced mobility: the water supports your weight and allows movements that are simply not possible on dry land. Wallonia has a fine network of accessible pools, from large leisure baths to smaller municipal pools. This tour brings together five locations where wheelchair users can come and swim without worry — to spread across several visits, as they are far apart.

Start at Plopsaqua Hannut-Landen, the newest Plopsa water paradise. This leisure pool has a pool hoist, adapted changing cubicles and wide passageways throughout the complex. The big slides are not suitable for everyone, but the wave pool and the spa offerings are fully accessible. Piscine de La Louvière offers a classic sports layout with a 25-metre fixed pool and a more recreational teaching pool. The building has an adapted toilet and access to the pool is via a gentle ramp or lifting hoist — ask at the desk for assistance.

The Piscine communale de Malmedy and the Piscine de Waterloo are two thoroughly renovated municipal pools, each setting an example in its region. Malmedy has both a full-size sports pool and a smaller recreational basin, both reachable via a ramp. Waterloo also has an adapted changing room with enough space for an assistant. The pool is especially popular with people who have chronic pain conditions, thanks to the comfortable water temperature.

Finish with the Piscine de Ciney, a smaller but fully accessible municipal pool in the Condroz. Ideal for anyone seeking calm and not looking for a busy leisure pool. Practical tips: always call reception in advance to check whether the hoist will be available — not every pool has trained staff on hand at all times. Plan your visit preferably during quiet hours (early mornings on weekdays). Always bring your own toiletries; the adapted changing rooms do not always have full equipment.
