Accessible Knokke-Heist city trip: 1 day for wheelchair users

Knokke-Heist is the chic side of the Belgian coast — known for its galleries, fashion designers, sculpture trail along the promenade and the iconic Casino Knokke with its Magritte frescoes. For wheelchair users, Knokke-Heist is surprisingly accessible: a completely flat 12 km promenade, wide pavements in the centre, and beach wheelchairs via the Tiralo system. Below is a realistic timeline for one full day.

Beforehand: practical starting points

  • Train journey: from Brussels or Bruges you can reach Knokke Station in 75-90 min. Book at least 3 hours in advance via NMBS Assistance.
  • Parking: park in the underground car park at Lichttorenplein or Casino Knokke. Both are PRM-friendly.
  • Hotel: for a 2-day stay, Hotel Beaufort Knokke-Heist has adapted rooms with a walk-in shower.
  • Topography: Knokke-Heist is completely flat. The promenade along the entire coastline is step-free and surfaced.
  • Best season: May-June (spring, few crowds) and September (quiet late summer, perfect temperature).

Day 1: Centre, promenade and art

9.30 — Arrival in Knokke

Arrival at Knokke Station. Step-free platforms. From the station to the promenade: an 8-minute flat walk via Lippenslaan. Lippenslaan is traffic-free and has wide pavements — Knokke's chic shopping artery.

10.30 — Art galleries along Lippenslaan

Knokke has more than 30 art galleries along Lippenslaan and its side streets. Many have been renovated to be step-free. Open on weekdays around 11.00, usually closed on Sundays. Art-walk tip: a tram ride to Heist (the Coast Tram is fully PRM-accessible) takes you to the fishing heart of the municipality.

12.30 — Lunch on the promenade

Time for lunch with a sea view. Step-free addresses on the Albertstrand promenade: Brasserie Trio (ground floor, adapted toilet, classic coastal cuisine), Le Cuistot (gourmet bistronomy, step-free), or for mussels: Rubens in the centre. Local specialities: Knokse vlaai (a regional tart) and North Sea fish.

14.30 — Sculptures along the promenade (highlight!)

Knokke-Heist's iconic sculpture trail along the promenade — more than 50 contemporary sculptures by international artists (Wim Delvoye, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean-Michel Folon and others) spread over 12 km of surfaced promenade. Completely step-free — a special art experience from a wheelchair.

Tip: ask Visit Knokke-Heist for the map with all 50+ sculptures — free of charge. Allow 2-3 hours for the full route, or do a shorter section (Het Zoute → Albertstrand = 4 km).

17.00 — Casino Knokke and Magritte fresco

The iconic Casino Knokke from 1932 is fully step-free after a recent renovation. The Magritte fresco "The Domain of Arnheim" in the central hall is a highlight. The casino is freely accessible during the day for visiting (only evening gambling requires age 21+).

18.00 — Aperitif on the promenade

Time for a final drink. Many terraces on the Albertstrand promenade have an adapted toilet and ground-floor access. Tip: sunset on the promenade in September is spectacular.

19.30 — Dinner or train back

For a highlight: Sel Gris (Michelin-level, ground floor, adapted toilet). For those who prefer to head back early: the station is 10 minutes' rolling distance via Lippenslaan.

Bonus: the Zwin Nature Park

If you have more time: Zwin Nature Park in Knokke-Heist is an excellently adapted nature reserve with surfaced paths, a step-free visitor centre, and viewpoints over the tidal channel. From the centre it is 10 minutes by car or bus.

Beach visit with a Tiralo beach wheelchair

Knokke-Heist's beaches offer Tiralo beach wheelchairs — special wheelchairs with large floating wheels that can roll over soft sand and even into shallow water. Reserve through Visit Knokke-Heist at least 24 hours in advance. Best collection points: Het Zoute, Albertstrand and Heist beach.

What we do not recommend for wheelchair users in Knokke-Heist

  • Beach without a Tiralo: soft sand is impossible for a regular wheelchair.
  • Walking paths in the dune areas (such as the Zwin Nature Park forest loop): partly unsurfaced, stick to the main paths.
  • Busy summer Saturdays on Lippenslaan: extremely crowded, choose early morning or Sunday (shops closed but the street quiet).
  • Casino after 22.00 without a booking: the evening gambling room is not freely accessible without membership or registration.

In closing

Knokke-Heist is the most refined Belgian coastal city trip for wheelchair users — a flat promenade with a world-class sculpture trail, a step-free Casino with Magritte, and chic shopping without any gradients. For a complete coastal day, combine it with Ostend (30 min away via the Coast Tram) or a nature day at the Zwin.
