Cafe de la Paix Bastogne
Cafe de la Paix is an institution on the Place McAuliffe in Bastogne, directly opposite the famous Sherman tank monument that commemorates the Battle of the Bulge. The cafe reopened shortly after the war and has since welcomed generations of visitors, from American veterans to tourists who come to visit the war sites. The menu is simple — Ardennes charcuterie, cheese boards, croque-monsieurs — accompanied by regional beers and local coffee.
The cafe's accessibility was improved during the latest renovation. The entrance on the square is at ground level with a flush threshold. The interior is spacious and bright with a central counter and tables that allow ample manoeuvring space. The terrace on the square is entirely flat with sturdy paving. The toilet is reachable without steps but the door is slightly narrower than ideal for large wheelchairs; staff are happy to assist.
The Place McAuliffe has several adapted parking spaces just metres from the cafe. The whole square has recently been redeveloped and is one of the most accessible spots in Bastogne. The Bastogne War Museum, a ten-minute drive away, also has an excellent accessible trail.
