Aldeneik Maaseik
Aldeneik is a hamlet of Maaseik on the bank of the Maas and is home to the Sint-Anna Church, one of the oldest churches in Limburg with Romanesque origins and preserved 8th-century evangelary fragments. The little village sits quietly between meadows and old lime-tree avenues and is crossed by the Maas walking route and the cross-border cycling route. It is a wonderfully quiet spot that only gets a little busier on summer Sundays.
The church itself is accessible via a side entrance with a gentle ramp; the western entrance has a high threshold that is less suitable for independent wheelchair users. Inside, the central nave is level. The walking paths along the Maas are wide and paved for about a kilometre south of the village; beyond that, the surface changes to compacted dolomite. Adapted toilets are available in the visitor centre on the Aldeneikerplein.
Parking with a blue badge is possible right next to the church and along the Maas bank. Combine with a visit to the Grote Markt of Maaseik, five minutes by car, or with the nearby RivierPark Maasvallei where you can walk further on flat dyke sections. A terrace on the Maaskaai offers a view across to the Dutch bank.
