Ambiorix Park Tongeren
Ambiorix Park sits on the Grote Markt in Tongeren, right next to the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Basilica. The central statue of Ambiorix, the Eburones leader who held off the Romans in 54 BC, is a popular meeting point and a rewarding photo spot for anyone visiting the oldest city in Belgium. Around the park you will find terraces, brasseries and shops that each lend their own character to this Roman city centre.
Accessibility has been carefully considered. The main paths around the statue are wide and surfaced with smooth pavers, allowing manual and electric wheelchairs to roll through easily. The edges of the Grote Markt are partly cobbled, particularly towards the basilica; for those who wish to avoid these, a flat alternative route runs along the Stadhuisstraat. Adapted toilets are available in the nearby Tourism Tongeren office and in the Gallo-Roman Museum.
Disabled parking spaces are located at the Vrijthof and at the car park beneath the Grote Markt; from there it is just a few minutes' roll to the park. A visit combines ideally with the Gallo-Roman Museum two hundred metres away, followed by a terrace break on the market square. Those with more time can take a barrier-free loop along the Roman city walls past the Moerenpoort.
