Belfry of Kortrijk
The Belfry of Kortrijk is one of the few free-standing belfries in Belgium and stands in the middle of the Grote Markt. The tower originally dates from 1307 and survived various wars and city fires. At the base of the belfry stand the figures of Manten and Kalle, the legendary bell-ringers of Kortrijk. The belfry is UNESCO World Heritage and is a beloved meeting point in the city.
Accessibility around the Belfry is excellent: the Grote Markt is largely level, recently redesigned and equipped with smooth paved zones that are easily navigable by wheelchair. The tower itself cannot be climbed by the public, so the typical limitation of interior stairs does not apply here. Around the belfry there are terraces and hospitality venues with accessible entrances.
Adapted toilets are available in the tourist reception and various hospitality venues on the Markt. Disabled parking spaces are provided in the underground Schouwburgplein car park and K car park, both within 200 metres. The historic city centre of Kortrijk is largely low-traffic and suitable for a quiet wheelchair walk, with accessible connections to the Broel Museum, Saint Martin's Church, and the Broel Towers.
