The Chateau de Modave is an imposing 17th-century castle perched high above the Hoyoux valley in the province of Liege. Also known as the Chateau des Comtes de Marchin, the castle was extensively remodelled in the 1650s in a classicist style and houses one of the best-preserved historic interiors in Belgium. The beautifully decorated rooms, including an impressive Hercules stucco ceiling, bear witness to the opulence of 17th-century nobility.

Accessibility at the Chateau de Modave is partial. The outdoor areas and gardens are largely navigable for wheelchair users, although the terrain is hilly. The ground floor of the castle is accessible via a ramp and already offers an impressive glimpse of the historic interiors. The upper floors are only reachable by stairs. Designated accessible parking spaces are available at the entrance and adapted toilet facilities are provided in the visitor centre.

The castle is located at Rue du Parc 4 in Modave and is accessible via the E42 (Modave exit). The estate is surrounded by extensive forests and offers walking opportunities in the Hoyoux valley. A visit can be combined with a trip to the Caves of Modave, the nearby Castle of Jehay or a walk along the picturesque Hoyoux river. The castle is open from April to November and offers guided tours.

Good to know

Reservation
Call ahead for a visit with reduced mobility — the guide will plan an adapted route. The Hercules stucco ceiling is the highlight and is clearly visible from a wheelchair.
Busy and quiet times
Busiest during school holidays and summer weekends. Weekday early afternoons are the quietest.
Things to note
The historic character imposes some restrictions. **Some rooms only accessible via steps** — not all interiors can be reached. The semi-paved path around the castle can be difficult after rain.
Visit tip
25 minutes from Liège via the E25. Combine with the Meuse Valley RAVeL or Saint Paul's Cathedral Liège for a half day of heritage.
