Citadelle de Huy
The Citadelle de Huy towers high above the Meuse town of Huy and offers breathtaking views of the Meuse Valley and the old town. The current fortress was built in the first half of the 19th century on the site of older defensive works and later served as a prison during the Second World War. Today it houses a memorial museum explaining its wartime past.
Due to the military and historic character of the building, accessibility is limited. The main entrance and some central rooms are reachable via an adapted route, but many narrow passages, stairs and level differences inside the citadel complex are not suitable for wheelchair users. The outdoor area and the viewing platform already offer a powerful experience from the accessible section. An accessible toilet is provided.
The site is reached via a car park at the bottom with a few accessible spaces; the well-known cable car between the town and the citadel is also present but is not always wheelchair accessible. Book in advance and enquire about current access options.
