De Blankaart in Woumen (a sub-municipality of Diksmuide, West Flanders) is one of Belgium's most important wetland nature reserves — part of the wider IJzer valley nature area and managed by Natuurpunt (Flanders' largest nature conservation organisation). The area is known for its bird-rich reed beds, marsh zones and the Blankaart pond — an essential stopover for waterfowl and one of the finest spots in Flanders for bird observation.

The Provincial Visitor Centre De Blankaart on the Iepersteenweg forms the accessible main entrance to the reserve. The centre has accessible entry, adapted sanitary facilities and a cafeteria with a wheelchair-friendly table layout. From the visitor centre, paved and semi-paved main paths suitable for wheelchairs set out — the dyke walk to the first bird hide is the most accessible route and offers direct waterside experience.

What works for wheelchair users: paved forecourt and approach to the visitor centre, semi-paved dyke walk, disabled parking directly at the entrance, adapted sanitary facilities inside. The bird hide on the dyke is reachable with a handbike or a wheelchair with larger wheels.

What works less well (for now): the marsh zones themselves — the reed beds and boggy areas have traditionally been accessible only via narrow wooden plank paths that are not all adapted for wheelchairs. That is changing, however: Wandelsport Vlaanderen (the Flemish walking sports federation) has announced, in collaboration with Natuurpunt, the construction of a wheelchair-friendly boardwalk as the first project of a new annual investment programme. See our news blog on this project for context and donation info.

Practical: free access to the walking paths. The visitor centre cafeteria has separate opening hours — check in advance. Summer tip: come early in the morning for the most bird activity. Insects: bring mosquito spray in July-August.

Combine with a visit to the Belfry of Diksmuide (UNESCO) or the IJzertoren Diksmuide — both a 5 km drive away.
