De Fonteintjes Zeebrugge
De Fonteintjes is a unique nature area that stretches as a narrow green strip between Zeebrugge and Blankenberge, wedged between the coastal road and the Koninklijke Baan. The elongated reserve owes its name to the freshwater springs that emerge from the dunes and feed many small ponds, a rarity in an area otherwise dominated by salt water. The combination of dune, marsh and forest makes De Fonteintjes a biodiversity hotspot with orchids, dragonflies and many bird species. A wooden boardwalk leads visitors through the fragile area without damaging the soil.
Accessibility is partial. The boardwalk laid out from the entrance on the Koninklijke Baan is largely flat and navigable by wheelchair, although some wooden planks can become slippery in the rain. The boardwalk offers fine views over the ponds and dunes. Deeper paths through the reserve itself consist of loose sand and are not wheelchair friendly. Adapted toilets are available to a limited extent; use the facilities in Zeebrugge or Blankenberge.
Parking with disabled spaces is possible along the Koninklijke Baan in a few designated spots. The area is well served by Coast Tram (stop Zeebrugge Strandwijk or Blankenberge Wenduine), and the coastal promenade runs right next to the reserve. Combine a visit with the harbour promenade of Zeebrugge or refreshments on the seafront.
