De Kolonie Beringen
De Kolonie in Beringen is a unique heritage project that has breathed new life into the former mining colony. The neighbourhood, built in the 1920s as a garden district for miners, has been carefully restored and transformed into a lively quarter with housing, workshops, hospitality venues, and a visitor centre that tells the story of the mining industry.
The entire neighbourhood was designed as a flat garden district and is therefore excellently accessible for wheelchair users. The streets and paths are paved and step-free. The visitor centre in the former director's house is fully accessible with a lift and adapted toilets. The model house showing the life of a miner's family can be visited on the ground floor.
Parking with disabled bays is available at the visitor centre. De Kolonie is within walking distance of the be-MINE mining site with the Mining Museum. A visit to both sites makes for a fascinating day trip exploring Limburg's mining heritage.
