The Grote Kreek near Wetteren is a varied nature area along the Scheldt, managed by Natuurpunt. The reserve consists of old river arms, reed beds, hay meadows and small woodlands that form a habitat for countless bird species. Especially in spring and autumn the area is a paradise for bird lovers, with regular sightings of rare species such as the bittern, the bluethroat and various birds of prey.

In partnership with Natuurpunt and the province of East Flanders, an accessible footpath has been built that is around two kilometres long and fully level. The surface consists of compacted dolomite that remains easy to navigate even after rain. At the end of the path stands a wheelchair-friendly bird observation hide with a lowered viewing slot and a level ramp. Along the way you pass several information panels about the fauna and flora of the area.

The car park at the main entrance at the Schelde-deur has two reserved disabled spaces on a paved surface. From the car park the path is immediately step-free. An accessible toilet is unfortunately not provided on the site itself; the nearest accessible toilets are in the centre of Wetteren, five minutes away by car. For longer visits we suggest planning a stop in the centre first.

The Grote Kreek combines nicely with a visit to the centre of Wetteren or with a wheelchair-friendly cycle trip along the banks of the Scheldt. The municipality has put effort into wheelchair-friendly recreation in recent years, and the Scheldepad offers level, wide asphalt for those who want to go further. For lovers of peace and nature, half a day at the Grote Kreek is an ideal restful outing without large crowds.
