Provincial Domain De Gavers in Geraardsbergen is one of the larger recreation domains in East Flanders, built around a 35-hectare reservoir surrounded by 110 hectares of woodland, meadow and trail. The domain blends nature with recreation: swimming on the sand beach in summer, fishing, birdwatching, mini-golf, a large playground, and an extensive network of walking and cycling routes. For many families in the Flemish Ardennes, De Gavers is one of the favourite day-trip destinations.

The domain is very well suited to wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. The main entrance is step-free and the visitor centre has an adapted toilet, a step-free cafeteria and a spacious reception desk. The large lake loop is mostly paved, with a few short sections of semi-stabilised dolomite — manageable in a regular wheelchair, though a companion is welcome on those stretches. Accessible parking spaces are located near the main entrance and are free.

In summer the sand beach is one of the highlights. The approach is paved up to the edge of the sand; to venture onto the sand itself, beach wheelchairs are available free of charge at the visitor-centre desk (best reserved in advance on peak days). The domain also has a wheelchair-friendly fishing pier and the playground includes adapted play equipment.

Practical: the domain is easy to reach by car via the E429/A8 (exit Geraardsbergen) or from Brussels via the N42. Accessible parking is available at the main entrance and is free for holders of a European parking card. The visit combines well with a stroll through the centre of Geraardsbergen (Manneken Pis, Oudenberg chapel) or with another wheelchair-accessible nature area in the Flemish Ardennes.

Reservation
No reservation needed for the domain itself. For events, mini-golf or beach access in July and August, online ticketing is recommended to avoid queues at the desk.
Busy and quiet times
Busiest on sunny summer weekends and during school holidays, especially at the beach and the playground. Quietest on weekdays outside holidays and in spring and autumn; in winter, the domain remains a fine walking destination.
Things to note
The lake loop (about 5 km) is mostly paved but contains short stretches of semi-stabilised dolomite. The beach is reached via a paved approach; venturing onto the sand requires a beach wheelchair (free at the visitor-centre desk).
Visit tip
Combine with a visit to Geraardsbergen town centre or lunch in the visitor-centre cafeteria, which is itself wheelchair accessible. Accessible parking is right by the main entrance.
