♿ Wheelchair accessible

The Grote Markt of Tienen is often cited as one of the largest market squares in Belgium and is dominated by the Gothic Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ten-Poel Church and the neo-Flemish town hall. Each Saturday the weekly market takes place, with the entire surface filled with stalls. Outside market hours it is a vast square that mainly serves as parking and passage space, with a few terraces along its edges.

The surface is a mixture: the central section has been recently relaid with smooth pavers that are wheelchair accessible, while the side strips have historic cobbles with coarser joints. For wheelchair users, a level route along the south side of the square is the most comfortable. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ten-Poel Church has a main entrance with a few steps; a side entrance on the east side gives access to the nave via a ramp. The Tourism Office in the town hall has a barrier-free entrance and adapted sanitary facilities.

Disabled parking spaces are in the underground car park beneath the square with an adapted lift, or above ground at Kabbeekvest. Tienen station, ten minutes' roll away, offers assistance on request through SNCB. Combine with a visit to the Sugar Museum on the edge of town or a terrace break at one of the welcoming square terraces. Tienen is a good destination for a short half-day trip from Leuven or Hasselt.
