Han Caves Wheelchair Accessible?
The Caves of Han at Han-sur-Lesse are one of Belgium's most spectacular natural wonders. This extensive cave system, carved by the River Lesse over millions of years, offers visitors an underground world of impressive stalactites, stalagmites and immense galleries. Above ground, the Han Wildlife Park covers 250 hectares and is home to European species such as bison, wolves, lynx and brown bears living in their natural habitat.
The Caves of Han hold Access-i certification. Accessibility is partial, however: the cave itself has an adapted route for visitors with limited mobility, but not all sections are accessible by wheelchair due to the natural terrain and elevation changes. The wildlife park offers a safari by tourist train that is wheelchair accessible, allowing visitors to admire the animals without having to walk. Adapted toilets are available at the visitor centre.
The site is located in the village of Han-sur-Lesse, accessible via the E411 and the N86. A spacious car park with PMR spaces is available. It is advisable to contact the site in advance to discuss options for wheelchair users, so that your visit can be planned for the best experience. A day at Han-sur-Lesse combines well with a visit to nearby Rochefort.
Good to know
- Reservation
- Tickets are best booked online in advance, especially during holidays. Mention at the desk that you use a wheelchair: there are adapted spots on the tram that runs to the caves.
- Busy and quiet times
- Busiest on sunny summer days and during school holidays. Quietest on weekdays in spring and autumn.
- Things to note
- The caves themselves contain some stair sections and uneven passages - not fully wheelchair accessible. The Wildlife Park, the visitor centre, and the terrace are step-free. For wheelchair users an adapted tour of the first cave halls is possible; ask about this when buying tickets.
- Visit tip
- Ask at the desk about the accessible route: a few cave halls are level and reachable without stairs. Disabled parking right next to the visitor centre, free for holders of a European parking card.
