Heemkundemuseum Arsenaal Mechelen
The Heemkundemuseum Arsenaal is an intimate museum in the historic heart of Mechelen, dedicated to the local crafts, folk traditions and daily life of Mechelen's population through the centuries. The museum is housed in a former 18th-century military arsenal building that has been renovated while preserving its authentic façade. The collection shows traditional trades such as lacemaking, cabinetmaking and the grain trade, alongside a series of town models.
Accessibility is partial. The main entrance has one historic step, which is bridged with a portable ramp. After that, the ground floor with the main exhibition rooms is step-free. The upper floor with the extensive crafts collection is only reachable via stairs. An adapted toilet is available on the ground floor, with enough turning space and grab bars. The inner courtyard with the town models is at ground level and paved.
Disabled parking is available on the nearby Veemarkt. The museum lies within the historic core of Mechelen, which is largely paved with cobblestones; flat passes generally provide a more comfortable approach. Combine your visit with the fully accessible Hof van Busleyden or a terrace on Mechelen's Grote Markt.
