Gaasbeek Castle
Gaasbeek Castle is one of the finest castle museums in Flanders, set in the rolling Pajottenland countryside south-west of Brussels. The medieval castle, whose origins date back to the 13th century, houses an impressive collection of paintings, tapestries, furniture and art objects. The surrounding gardens, including the Museum Garden and the Plum Orchard, provide an idyllic setting for a stroll through nature.
Accessibility is partial but well arranged. The ground floor and first floor of the castle are wheelchair accessible thanks to a lift. A member of the museum staff will be happy to assist you with its use. Two wheelchairs are available: one in the castle and one in the entrance building. The toilets are wheelchair friendly, both in the castle and in the entrance building. The narrowest passage in the castle is 80 centimetres wide. Some rooms, including the Egmond Room, the Blue Room and the Treasure Attic, are unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.
The Museum Garden is more difficult to reach by wheelchair due to some steep uphill sections, but an alternative route is available via the Plum Orchard (the first pathway on the right after the entrance building). Visitors with disabilities and their companion receive free admission. Gaasbeek Castle is a magnificent destination where history, art and nature come together.
