Begijnhof Diest
The Begijnhof of Diest is one of the Flemish beguinages listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This well-preserved beguinage dates from the 13th century and forms an oasis of calm in the middle of the city. The picturesque houses, the Gothic church, and the peaceful inner gardens make it a remarkable attraction. The beguinage is still inhabited and exudes an atmosphere of centuries-old serenity.
The main paths through the Begijnhof are paved with cobblestones and flat stones, making it largely accessible for wheelchair users. The entrances are step-free and the wide lanes offer sufficient space. Some smaller side paths may have some unevenness due to the historic paving. An adapted toilet is available at the reception building.
Parking is available at nearby car parks in the centre of Diest, with reserved accessible spaces. The Begijnhof is within walking distance of the station and the Grote Markt. A visit combines perfectly with a walk through the Warande or the historic centre.
