Leeuwergem Castle
The Castle of Leeuwergem in Elene (Zottegem) is a classicist country house from the 18th century, built on the site of an older moated castle. The castle is especially famous for its gardens in French style, designed on the model of Versailles, with strict parterres, water features, and a unique green open-air theatre of metre-high beech hedges. The gardens are occasionally open for visits during guided tours and garden events.
Accessibility is partial. The castle itself is a private residence and is rarely opened to the public. The gardens are accessible during public openings via a level gravel-path structure; some paths are better paved than others, and after rain the terrain can become muddy. The green theatre and the central avenues are relatively level to navigate. The castle has no adapted entrance for visitors.
Disabled parking spaces are provided at the entrance to the estate during public opening days. An adapted toilet is limited in availability, usually as a mobile unit at events. A visit to Leeuwergem combines well with the Egmont Park in Zottegem or the Provincial Domain De Gavers in Geraardsbergen, both with well-accessible walking paths.
