Small Beguinage Ghent
The Small Beguinage of Our Lady Ter Hoyen in Ghent was founded in 1234 and, with its characteristic white houses, small green gardens, and baroque beguinage church, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Unlike many other beguinages, a community still lives here, which preserves the serene atmosphere. The beguinage is close to the Muinkschelde and the Sint-Pieters station.
Accessibility is partial. The entrance gate on the Lange Violettestraat is level and sufficiently wide. The inner paths consist of cobblestones that are here and there uneven, making wheelchair use require some alertness. Along the rows of houses narrower but smoother strips are available. The beguinage church has a small step at the entrance and a wheelchair-accessible spot on the ground floor. Due to its residential character, not all interior spaces are public.
Adapted toilets are available in hospitality venues at the Muinkschelde and in the nearby Citadel Park. Disabled parking spaces are located on the edge of the low-traffic beguinage area and in the Sint-Pietersplein car park. The beguinage combines excellently with a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, S.M.A.K., and the Citadel Park, all within a short distance.
