Museum of Photography - Charleroi
The Museum of Photography (Musee de la Photographie), located in Mont-sur-Marchienne, a district of Charleroi, is the largest museum dedicated to photography in Europe. Housed in a former 19th-century neo-Gothic convent that was extended in 2008 with a modern glass wing, the museum covers an area of 6,000 square metres. The collection includes more than 100,000 photographs and 1.5 million negatives, featuring works from pioneers such as Daguerre to contemporary photographers.
Accessibility at the museum is excellent. Both the historic building and the modern extension are fully wheelchair accessible thanks to lifts, ramps and wide passages. Designated accessible parking spaces are available in the car park and adapted toilet facilities are provided on multiple floors. The exhibition spaces are spacious and clearly laid out. Wheelchairs are available at reception and staff are happy to assist visitors with disabilities.
The museum is located at Avenue Paul Pastur 11 in Mont-sur-Marchienne and can be reached by tram from the centre of Charleroi. The museum hosts changing exhibitions by international photographers throughout the year, as well as workshops and educational programmes. The museum shop offers an extensive selection of photography books. A visit can be combined with a trip to BPS22, Charleroi's art centre, or to Le Bois du Cazier.
Good to know
- Reservation
- Individual visitors do not need to book in advance. Groups (10+) and guided wheelchair-accessible visits: book by phone. For special exhibition openings, you can buy tickets online to avoid long queues.
- Busy and quiet times
- Peak: sunny weekends (particularly during major exhibitions) between 2 and 5pm. **Quietest**: weekdays before noon and on rainy days — the museum is a true oasis of calm then. Closed on Mondays.
- Things to note
- **Fully accessible** — lifts, ramps, wide passages, adapted sanitary facilities on multiple floors. Wheelchairs available on loan at reception. Only limitation: the collection is so extensive (6,000 m²) that you will easily need 3+ hours — plan accordingly.
