Trappist Achel brewery
Achelse Kluis is a former Trappist abbey on the border between Limburg and the Netherlands, deep in the Campine forests. It is where the unique Trappist Achel was once brewed. Although the monastic community has left the abbey, the site remains an important heritage point with a visitor centre, tasting room and an extensive abbey grounds. The peace and greenery make it a popular outing for beer lovers and nature visitors alike.
The main entrance of the visitor centre and brasserie is barrier-free via a level ramp. The tasting room and cafeteria are on the ground floor with wide passages. An adapted toilet is provided in the visitor area. The inner courtyard is partly paved with historic cobbles that can be uneven; wheelchair users preferably roll along the marked level strip. The brewing rooms themselves are not open to the public.
Around the Kluis lie walking paths through the heath and forest, partly paved and partly semi-paved. For wheelchair users, the loop around the central abbey pond is most suitable: level, wide and without major slopes. The spacious car park has reserved spaces a few metres from the entrance. Combine your visit with the nearby Hageven nature reserve, which also offers accessible paths.
