Antwerp Museum Route

Antwerp is a city that surprises with its combination of historic heritage and contemporary culture. This route connects four top venues that together tell the story of the city on the Scheldt: from the Golden Age of Rubens to the emigration waves of the twentieth century, and from port history to one of the oldest zoos in the world.

Start at the MAS, the Museum aan de Stroom, in the Eilandje district. This architectural eye-catcher is fully wheelchair accessible. Lifts take you to every floor, including the panoramic rooftop on the tenth floor with breathtaking views over the city and harbour. The wide corridors and flat floors make the museum exceptionally comfortable. Within walking distance you will find the Red Star Line Museum, housed in the historic sheds where millions of Europeans embarked for America. This museum is also fully accessible with lifts and adapted facilities.

The Rubens House, the former home and studio of Peter Paul Rubens, is located in the city centre. The museum is accessible by lift and wide passageways, although some historic rooms are somewhat narrower. The beautiful courtyard garden is easy to navigate. Take a break at the museum shop or the adjacent cafe before continuing.

End your route at ZOO Antwerp, right next to the Central Station. The zoo is one of the oldest in the world and has spacious, paved paths that are easy to navigate by wheelchair. Adapted toilets are located throughout the grounds, and at the entrance you can ask about the most accessible route. Disabled parking spaces can be found both at the MAS and at the Central Station. The Antwerpen-Centraal and Antwerpen-Berchem railway stations are both equipped with lifts.
