Kids Day Out

A day out with the whole family while keeping wheelchair accessibility in mind? It is perfectly possible in Belgium. This route bundles four top attractions that offer a fantastic experience for both children and adults in a wheelchair. From interactive science in Mechelen to wild animals at Planckendael and roller coasters at Bellewaerde — boredom is not on the agenda. Spread the visits over two days for maximum enjoyment and minimum fatigue.

Start in Mechelen at Technopolis, the Flemish hands-on centre for science and technology. With more than three hundred interactive experiments, it is a paradise for curious children. The building is fully wheelchair accessible: all floors are reached by lifts, the aisles between exhibits are wide enough for wheelchairs, and adapted toilets are available on every floor. Many experiments are designed so that they can be operated from a seated position. Then walk to the Toy Museum, also in the centre of Mechelen. This charming museum tells the story of toys through the ages, from wooden dolls to video games. The museum is housed in a renovated historic building with a lift and wide doorways. Children can get creative in the play workshops, and most activities are also perfectly doable from a wheelchair.

On the second day, head to Planckendael, the animal park in Mechelen that is part of the ZOO Antwerp group. The park is extensive but largely flat, with paved and well-maintained paths. Loan wheelchairs are available at the entrance and there are regular rest points and adapted toilets. The animal enclosures are designed so that you have a good view from a wheelchair as well. In the afternoon, drive to Bellewaerde in Ypres, a theme park that has invested in accessibility for years. The park has a special accessibility programme under which companions receive free admission. Many rides are wheelchair accessible or have an adapted boarding procedure. The animal section of the park is entirely flat and paved.

Practical tips: book ahead if you need assistance at attractions, so that staff can welcome you upon arrival. Most venues offer loan wheelchairs, but it is best to bring your own chair for the greatest comfort. Family toilets with enough space for a wheelchair are present at all four venues. Bear in mind that Technopolis and the Toy Museum can be very busy during school holidays — a weekday visit is quieter. At Bellewaerde you can download an online accessibility guide with details per ride on boarding and accessibility.
