♿ Wheelchair accessible

Planckendael Zoo, located along the banks of the river Dijle in Mechelen, is one of Belgium's premier zoological parks and a sister park to the famous Antwerp Zoo. The park is home to hundreds of animal species from around the globe, thoughtfully arranged across themed continents -- from the African savanna to the jungles of Asia and the forests of Europe. With its spacious grounds, lush gardens, and educational programmes, Planckendael is a favourite destination for families and animal lovers.

Accessibility has been carefully integrated into the park's design. Nearly all zones and animal enclosures are reachable via paved, level paths that are comfortable for wheelchair users and visitors with mobility aids. The only exception is the elevated treetop trail, which involves steps and is not wheelchair accessible. Seven adapted toilet blocks are distributed throughout the park, ensuring facilities are never far away. Wheelchair users can also enjoy the indoor pavilions, which feature ramp access and spacious interiors.

Designated accessible parking spaces are available close to the main entrance, and the ticket counters and information desk are designed at an accessible height. The on-site restaurants and picnic areas are wheelchair friendly, and several play areas include inclusive play equipment. Planckendael regularly reviews and improves its accessibility features, making it a welcoming destination for visitors of all abilities who want to connect with the animal world.

Good to know

Reservation
Online tickets are cheaper and quicker than at the gate. A combi-ticket with Antwerp Zoo is worthwhile if you visit both parks.
Busy and quiet times
Weekends and school holidays attract many families. A weekday outside the holidays or the late afternoon is quieter on the 40 hectares of paths.
Things to note
The treetop trail is not wheelchair accessible. For the Asian zone, with its longer distances, adapted safari buggies are available.
Visit tip
Ask at the entrance about borrowing a wheelchair and enquire about the most accessible route. The seven adapted toilet blocks are spread across the park.
