't Heiderbos Recreation Area Playground Brasschaat
't Heiderbos recreation area in Brasschaat is a green oasis on the edge of the municipality. The site combines pine forest, heathland and open play meadows into a natural setting for a family outing. The playground at the heart of the area was recently renewed, with attention paid to both motor challenge and accessibility for children with disabilities. A large play disc at ground level, wide climbing frames with step-up support and a sandbox at table height ensure that wheelchair users can also play actively.
The paths in the area are partly paved and partly built with semi-paved dolomite. The main route from the car park to the playground is level and easily passable for a wheelchair or buggy, even after rain. The side paths through the heath are narrower and can feel bumpy in places. An accessible toilet is provided in the central service building at the entrance. In the summer months a refreshment kiosk with a wheelchair-height terrace is open.
't Heiderbos is free of charge and open all year round. The car park is right next to the play area and has clearly marked accessible spaces. Brasschaat is easy to reach via the A12 and the Antwerp ring road, and the area makes a quiet stopover on the northern edge of Antwerp. A weekday visit is preferable to avoid weekend crowds.
