Café De Pelgrom Antwerp
Café De Pelgrom is one of the oldest and most atmospheric cellar restaurants in Antwerp, within walking distance of the Grote Markt and the Cathedral. Guests descend an old stone staircase into a sixteenth-century vaulted cellar where a nostalgic menu is served with Flemish classics, regional beers and game in season. Waiters in historical dress make it an immersive experience.
The charm of De Pelgrom lies in its historical authenticity, but unfortunately that makes the restaurant inaccessible for wheelchair users. The entrance is at the bottom of a steep stone staircase, with no lift or ramp. The cellar interior itself has uneven stone floors and low thresholds. Adapted sanitary facilities are not provided. The owners are friendly and open to questions, but the physical structure of this listed building leaves little room for adaptations.
Several well-accessible alternatives can be found in the area on Hoogstraat and the Grote Markt. The surrounding streets are partly paved with cobbles, which is less comfortable for wheelchair users. A few reserved parking spaces are located on Oude Koornmarkt. By public transport, the area is reachable by low-floor tram.
