Boerentoren Antwerp
The Boerentoren, officially the KBC Tower, is an art deco building on the Schoenmarkt in the heart of Antwerp. When completed in 1932, its 87-metre height made it one of the first true skyscrapers in Europe. The tower is a milestone in Belgian architectural history and counts as an early and rare European example of the modernist high-rise idiom. The building is currently undergoing thorough renovation and is being repurposed as an arts venue.
The area around the Boerentoren is easy for wheelchair users to navigate thanks to the flat, paved footpaths of the Schoenmarkt and the Eiermarkt. The building itself is only partly open to the public due to the ongoing renovation works. After reopening, the ground floor will be step-free, but visits to the upper floors will depend on lifts and the final layout. An accessible toilet is available in nearby cafes on the Groenplaats.
Visitors with a wheelchair are best served by parking in the underground Grote Markt or Groenplaats car parks, both a few hundred metres away and equipped with accessible spaces. From the Groenplaats premetro station, the Boerentoren is easily reached via the pedestrian shopping streets. Combining the visit with the Cathedral of Our Lady or the Grote Markt makes this a fine historic walking destination.
